Repertoire Guidelines
Students may choose to perform relevant original compositions for piano solo from the 16th until the 21st centuries of all the relevant and major composers for solo piano.This includes original compositions for harpsichord, clavichord and pianoforte from the 16th until the 18th centuries and contemporary piano music (also prepared piano music, if the preparation does not exceed one minute). This does not include popular music, standard jazz music, folklore music, computer music and simplifying transcriptions. Cross overs might be eligible. ***REQUIRED*** All competitors will perform at least one etude by Prof. Falko Steinbach. Group 1 – Ages 8-12, will be divided into three rounds; preliminary, semi-final, and final.
A. Competitors will perform 3-5 minutes for the preliminary round. An unlimited number of students will create video performances, and submit these as an unlisted YouTube video link.
Video Performance Criteria: Competitor videos must be recorded no more than one year prior to submission. Complete live performance of each piece by the competitor is required. The recording must be presented as a complete, uninterrupted documentation of the competitor’s performance. Video editing, including the switching of camera angles, or added special effects are prohibited and will not be accepted under any circumstances.On the recording, the instrument, hands, and face of the performer must be clearly visible. Students may submit multiple videos so long as the time limit for each category is respected.The judgement will be made exclusively based upon the materials received.
B. Competitors will perform 5-10 minutes for the semi-final round. Ten competitors will be selected to perform in-person at the performance space, all competing on day one of the competition. Competitors will perform 10-15 minutes for the final round. Three finalists will perform in a morning competition on day two of the event. The winner will perform in the evening winners’ concert on day two.

C. Competitors will perform 30-45 minutes for the final round. Three finalists will perform in a morning competition on day two of the event. The winner will perform in the evening winners’ concert on day two.
Competition Regulations –
- The competition is open to all national, international, and New Mexico residents who fall into the aforementioned age ranges.
- All pieces must be played from memory, with the exception of works composed after 2000.The pieces selected for performance and the their ordering will be determined by the applicant.
- The ordering of the competitors will be determined by ballot.
- Competitors who are not available to perform when called upon to do so by the Jury may be disqualified.
- The decisions of the Jury will be final and beyond appeal.
- The Jury may award or withhold any prize as deemed fit.
- The First Prize cannot be tied.
- Rights to any competition performance whether broadcast, televised, recorded or filmed belong exclusively to the competition. No fee is payable on account of these performances or any recordings, broadcasts or transmissions of them.
- The jury will select the program for the final winner’s recital from the repertoire that has been performed by the winning competitors.
- The directors reserve the right to alter these numbers at their discretion.
- Strict adherence to time limits must be observed.
- No competitor may repeat a performance of a work during the competition.
- Applications and preliminary round video submissions will be submitted concurrently.
- All applications and video submissions are due three months prior to the starting date of the competition.
- Your completed application form with a non-refundable registration fee must be post marked no later than 3 months prior to the competition commencement. The total costs are: $40 fee for group 1 entry: $60 fee for group 2 entry: $100 for group 3 entry.
- All fees are non-refundable.
- Contestants are responsible for their own expenses and must be prepared to remain for the evening concert on day 2 should they be selected as a finalist.
- No member of the jury may judge the performance of a past or current applied music student of their own. This includes any student who is currently studying piano, composition, or performative aspects of theory and musicianship, either privately or through an institution with that judge.
- All judges must declare all former and current relationships to any competitors in this capacity. Any error in following this rule will require a repeated performance for that competitor with a replacement judge, or judges, as is deemed fit.
